Hello there and welcome! I have plenty of topics and ideas to write about for this blog but this first one seems to evade me. Invade…pervade…persuade…dissuade… As an ESL teacher, I quickly came up with all these similar sounding words. My students often say one word but definitely mean another!
As with anyone learning a language, students need encouragement sometimes. It simply amazes me that we can learn a new language. The depth and complexity of a language and culture take years to master.
I feel much like my students. Instructional design is not one area of expertise, but it is a complex set of knowledge, skills, abilities and software that need to be learned and conquered. And much like my students, I have set out on a journey of learning.
Some days and weeks, I am frustrated that I’m not making much progress, or I feel like I’m not getting it. I need to remember the advice that I give them:
You can do it! You are intelligent and hard-working.
It’s a long process. Forgive yourself and start again.
You learn little by little and you keep at it. Persist…
You are progressing!!! Remember where you were 6 months ago!
I believe in you!
I love where they’re heading as they progress in English. It gives me such joy to see their improvement. And I love my journey too! I hope you will also enjoy it as I persist in my lifelong learning.
